Malaria is a major killer disease in Africa, and a primary cause of death and poverty.

Approximately 90% of the 1.5 million deaths attributed to malaria each year occur in sub-saharan Africa.  It is estimated that malaria costs Africa 12 billion US dollars annually in lost GDP.

The malaria parasite is immune to the anti-malarial drugs currently used in most African health systems.
